Manage stress. Stress brings peristalsis to a halt. Americans today rarely have a need for flight or fight (which induces peristalsis suppression). What they do have is all sorts of stresses which prevent us from going to the bathroom. Do everything you can to relax. This may mean doing yoga, winding down at the end of the day, or adding half an hour in the morning so that you have time for a bowel movement rather than just rushing out the door.
Avoid fermentable carbohydrates (FODMAPs). Lactose, fructose, and other carbohydrates are not easily digested by many people. When these pass through the digestive system, undigested, they cause inflammation and irritation to the intestinal lining. Many foods fall under the FODMAPs label but some of the more common ones include: apples, mango, pear, peas, asparagus, cabbage, garlic, onions, avocado, and mushrooms.
